Fort Chipewyan’s annual Winter Carnival had an addition this year that included a celebration of hockey, community, and winter magic, thanks to Imperial’s support in bringing skating excitement to the northern Alberta town. On February 22 and 23, families and young skaters gathered at the heart of the festivities—the rink—where they honed their skills, built friendships, and embraced the joy of winter sports.

Guiding the young athletes was coach Ben Martin, a former Athabasca Delta Community School teacher, returning to share his love for the game. Alongside Aidan Voyageur, the hockey camp welcomed more than 32 eager participants, aged five to 18, from first-time skaters to seasoned players. Inside the Archie Simpson Arena, determination and high-fives filled the air, while participants refueled with pizza and sweet treats throughout the day.
Imperial made sure each skater felt like a pro, providing jerseys to all participants, while Wahkohtowin Sports Circle generously donated equipment, ensuring accessibility for everyone. The excitement continued Sunday with a Community Skate Party, where 75 skaters—kids, parents, and grandparents alike—glided across the ice. The warmth of hot chocolate, snacks, and shared laughter transformed the rink into a hub of pure joy. The event would not have been the same without the invaluable collaboration of Tamera Ellingson from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Angela Marcel from Therese Tuccaro Secondary. “We valued collaboration with Fort Chipewyan community members and our other event partners to make this hockey and skating experience a reality”, stated Laura Bishop, Indigenous Engagement Manager for Imperial.
The Annual Carnival concluded with a heartwarming Community Dinner and Awards Reception at Mamawi Hall. Over a delicious spread featuring traditional stew and bannock, families reflected on the weekend’s special moments. Imperial representatives John Tuttauk, Indigenous Community Liaison, and Anthony Ladouceur joined in the celebration, reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting local traditions and community engagement. Imperial warmly thanks everyone who made this weekend truly exceptional. From the Athabasca Delta Community School and the Fort Chipewyan Winter Carnival Planning Committee to the dedicated community volunteers, Balsom Communications, and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons Organization—your commitment and support were essential in the success of this event.

To add even more hockey excitement to the mix, Imperial brought youth participants to Fort McMurray the following weekend to cheer on the Fort McMurray Oil Barons for the win in their last game of the regular season. The trip was capped off with a post-game meet and greet with the team in their locker room.
