YMM Builders of 2024
Presented by
The Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region thrives as a vibrant, diverse, and beautiful community, thanks in large part to the incredible contributions of the individuals we proudly call the YMM Builders.
These YMM Builders are selected for their lasting impact and the legacy they leave in our region. Through their unique efforts, they have played a vital role in shaping the growth and development of this community, leaving an indelible mark.
Now in its sixth year, Your McMurray Magazine continues to recognize the YMM Builders. The selection process is carried out by the same committee responsible for choosing the Top 50 Under 50, consisting of community members and the editorial team of Your McMurray Magazine.
This year’s honorees join the distinguished ranks of past YMM Builders, including John Wilson, Jack ‘Torchy’ Peden, Dave Tuccaro, Eric Newell, Jim Carter, Norm and Sheila Sutton, Julia McDougall, Alan Roberts, Paul and Andrea Spring, Elder Lina Gallup, Elder Robert Cree, Marty and Deninne Gilles, Elder Roy Ladouceur, Rick and Cathy Kirschner, and Frank and Barb Reitz.
We are proud to honour Elder Lorraine Albert and Robert Parmenter as this year’s YMM Builders. Thank you all for your invaluable contributions to our community.
The YMM Builders of 2024 will receive an award custom-designed by Fort McMurray artist Liana Wheeldon. Each award reflects the individual they are celebrating and features representations of the unique, important legacy that the recipients have given to our region. The awards created for the YMM Builders 2024 are construction bricks painted in watercolour, raw pigment, and ink. Two awards have birch bark, shed by trees from local trails, incorporated into their design.
Bricks represent the solid foundation, strength of spirit, and weighty contribution made by the YMM Builders.
“This year’s Builders are recognized for their seemingly innate ability to connect and support people, sharing knowledge, and contributing strength of spirit to the collective Wood Buffalo community.
I draw inspiration from the natural world to create the awards, using creatures and scenery to symbolize the recipients and the qualities which singled them out for recognition: generosity of spirit, sharing teachings, and belief in the power of caring.”
