Caroline Miller
Building Confidence in the Classroom and Beyond
CLASS OF 2025
Caroline Miller believes that teaching is about more than academics. She moved to Fort McMurray five years ago after graduating from the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean to pursue her career as a teacher. Today, she teaches Grades 7, 8 and 9 French Immersion with Fort McMurray Catholic Schools, where she inspires students to learn, grow, and discover their potential.
For Caroline, the most rewarding part of her work is the relationships she builds with her students. She loves teaching and watching children work through big ideas, but she says there is something truly special about seeing them grow into confident, capable young people. She also treasures the opportunity to teach in French, a language she deeply loves, and finds it inspiring to witness students gain fluency and enthusiasm. Beyond the classroom, she has coached sports and helped develop programs, giving her another lens to watch students shine. “Teaching brings me joy,” she says. “I feel lucky to cross paths with so many amazing little humans.”
Caroline’s commitment to community extends beyond her classroom. She serves as President of the Fort McMurray Elementary Athletics Association, overseeing elementary sport tournaments throughout the city. In this role, she helps organize nine or more tournaments each year, giving dozens of students the chance to try sports they might not otherwise access. She also coaches the Junior Varsity ‘Father Merc’ girls’ team and had the privilege of coaching the first-ever 14U all-girls baseball team. “I love seeing kids grow in confidence, on the field and off,” she says.
Family and mentors have shaped her approach to giving back. Growing up in Canmore, her parents instilled in her the belief that ‘it takes a village.’ Caroline carries that lesson with her, acknowledging that the support of her family, colleagues, and her boyfriend gives her the confidence to pursue ambitious projects. She adds that the community itself has played a key role in her personal journey, especially when she lost her brother. “The way people stepped up showed me the importance of being there for one another,” she says.
Caroline is motivated to create opportunities for young people and ensure equitable access to activities. She is working with local businesses to provide every elementary school in Fort McMurray with customized jerseys and to develop a communal inventory of sports equipment. Her goal is to remove barriers so every child can try new sports, build confidence, and feel included. She also hopes to continue growing French immersion programs in the region, celebrating language and culture while giving students new avenues to learn and connect.
Her experiences as a teacher, coach, and newcomer to Fort McMurray have shaped her perspective on community involvement. Caroline sees firsthand how support, encouragement, and opportunity can impact students’ growth. She believes that giving back is about creating experiences, building relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging. Programs that intentionally remove barriers and cultivate inclusion can make a lasting difference.
Looking ahead, Caroline plans to pursue a Master’s in Education to continue growing as an educator. She also wants to strengthen programs that support students’ development in sports and academics. “I see my role as contributing to the next generation,” she says. “By helping children explore skills, build confidence, and feel included, we build a stronger, more inclusive community.”
Through her work in the classroom, on the field, and in community programs, Caroline Miller is shaping the future of Fort McMurray one child at a time. Her dedication, energy, and commitment to inclusion ensure that students have the opportunities and support they need to thrive, both now and in the years to come.
