Darren is a very vocal spokesperson for the music scene in Fort McMurray. He often goes the extra mile, organizing shows and events, and helping with festivals for the community to enjoy.
He works as a construction coordinator with Suncor, and finds great satisfaction in playing music and organizing events, and seeing how much joy it brings to the community. He recently chatted with YMM about his passions, and his life as one of this year’s Top 50 Under 50.
YMM: What keeps you in Fort McMurray?
DE: I have a great network of friends, and I enjoy my involvement in the music community. I have been playing in town for over 20 years and have been a part of organizing/playing a lot of great shows, events and festivals.
YMM: What is the best advice that you ever received?
DE: Don’t be an idiot. “Whenever I’m about to do something, I think, ‘would an idiot do that?’ And, if they would, I do not do that thing.” Dwight Schrute – The Office
YMM: What is the worst advice that you ever received?
DE: “Get cilantro. You will love it.” Nope, it completely ruined my meal!!
YMM: What would you say to your 10-year-old self?
DE: Don’t try the Cilantro.
YMM: What motivates you?
DE: I am motivated by positive change. This could be at my job, at community events or just in life in general. When I see the results of the hard work that I put into something, it positively impacts my work, community, friends or family. It gives me a big sense of accomplishment and makes me want to do it bigger and better next time.
YMM: What are you best at?
DE: I think I have many great skills, but if I have to narrow it down, I think it would be around taking ideas (music/events) and turning them into reality. I’m very driven to make things happen once I have an idea in my head.
