“Dene Plews has a gift for storytelling. Her imagination runs deep and marries many beautiful themes - magic, introspection, love and even culture. It beautiful to see her come into her gift and move forward on a path that was definitely laid out for her a long time ago,” said one of this year’s nominators. Dene is self-employed as a freelancer and a facilitator, and shared with YMM about her work in film, and so much more.
YMM: What is the best advice that you ever received?
DP: You’re only going to get one of two answers: yes or no. If you quit, it’ll always be a no.
YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
DP: This year was full of so many amazing opportunities for me, but if I had to pick one--outside of my children, of course--I’d say the accomplishment I am most proud of is the film I wrote, directed and starred in. Earlier this year, I was asked to adapt one of my short stories to film for the Buffy’s award show in October. It was an incredible experience and so much fun! The best part about it was the opportunity to showcase my community in a better light while simultaneously including members of it and my family.
YMM: What would you say to your 10-year-old self?
DP: You are meant for so much more. Keep dreaming big, and don’t let other people’s perceptions of you dictate who you will become.
YMM: How would friends and acquaintances describe you?
DP: I was recently described as soft-hearted, kind, vivacious and full of adventure. I’m also extremely stubborn, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in my mind. I would define it as being tenacious, determined, and headstrong. It’s carried me through the hardest moments of my life. Once I make a commitment, there’s no going back. I’ll see it through no matter the outcome.
YMM: What motivates you?
DP: My family. Everything I do is for them. But the fear of regret is a close second. It keeps me in check and ensures I’m doing what’s in line with my goals and values.
YMM: What is something people are always surprised to learn about you?
DP: My name is Dene, but I’m Cree. I get teased so often by my brothers-in-law.
