For 10 years, Enbridge’s Senior Regional Engineer, Dustin Stuyt has called our region home. In 2022, he became the team leader of the Poverty to Possibility Community Investment Committee, and he is making an impact on the community every day. YMM: What is the most rewarding part of your career? DS: The most rewarding part of my career has been working with a diverse group of trades and professionals who have come from all over the world to work in Fort McMurray. YMM: Tell us about your volunteer experience in the community. DS: I’ve volunteered with United Way since 2015 and have been a member of the United Way Community Investment Committee since 2018. I became the team leader of the Poverty to Possibility Community Investment Committee in 2022. YMM: What does community mean to you? DS: Community means pulling together during hard times and being an active participant in making positive changes where you call home. YMM: What do you consider the best things about Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo? DS: Fort McMurray offers extraordinary outdoor opportunities with world-class amenities and career growth potential. The long summer days are incredible if you have enough hobbies/sports to fill the day. YMM: In your opinion, in what areas could Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo improve? DS: Improving the accessibility of some of the great outdoor attractions. This could be trails, bear awareness training, identifying plants, and trail maps. I think this is the biggest attraction we have and helping newcomers enjoy these things would benefit everyone. YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of? DS: I was listed as Inventor on my first patent this year. YMM: What is the worst advice that you ever received? DS: When I was 16, I drove a really old piece of junk truck, and there were a lot of people telling me to just get a loan for a new vehicle. I learned a lot from fixing my junky truck when it had issues and taking on car loan debt would have set me back a lot during my university years. YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years? DS: I used to work some pretty long hours chasing money and let stress from work get the better of me. I try to value my personal time a lot more now and enjoy squeezing in my hobbies as much as possible. YMM: For what are you most grateful? DS: I’m grateful for some of the people who kept me on track in some of my teenage years. I think there were a lot of points when I could have fallen into some bad habits and I always had people around me nudging me back to sports and school. YMM: Who is your hero, and why? DS: Richard Feynman. He was one of the youngest physicists to work on the Manhattan Project and he was an excellent lecturer. He came from humble origins and achieved some great things (including figuring out why the Challenger space shuttle crashed).
