Jason Beck
Manager of Community and Corporate Relations, Waypoints
CLASS OF 2020
, AGE 45
Jason Beck is a familiar face in the Wood Buffalo region’s social profit sector and as an actor on the Keyano Theatre stage. As a resident for a decade, he also has a strong pull towards the arts and community activism.
He is the Manager of Community and Corporate Relations at Waypoints, a social profit organization dedicated to helping individuals affected by domestic-family and sexual violence in operation for over 35 years.
His educational background was in media studies, but he turned his tides towards work through philanthropy and said by changing careers, he was able to find something to help make the world a better place.
“I have never worked a day in my life in journalism. I have always been someone who needed my work to fulfill my need to help people and make the world a better place in some way,” he said.
Despite the demands of the job he has, which can be a pull on the heartstrings, he makes time to rejuvenate himself through community engagement as an active volunteer both on the Regional Advisory Committee for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (RACIDE), and on the Provincial Advisory Council on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression(SOGIE) for Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Through both he is working on issues of great importance in the community and especially within the 2SLBGTQ+ community of which he is a proud member of.
“Outside of work, I enjoy volunteering for things that connect to my passions and interests,” he said. “Both of these committees are behind the scenes type committees that are working towards systemic changes needed within both organizations.”
Jason has also been active in the theatre community at Keyano Theatre for five years and has performed in seven shows to-date. He is also the treasurer for the Friends of the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts, which is a non-profit organization established to provide affordable and accessible arts programming in the community.
