Jennifer Stephenson
Doula & Childbirth Educator
CLASS OF 2021
, AGE 44
A doula, childbirth educator, and sexual health educator, Jennifer Stephenson has a passion for sharing knowledge.
She recently chatted with YMM about taking risks and facing challenges head-on.
YMM: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve taken on this year?
JS:
I bought a bus that my dad and I are converting into a tiny home, AKA a Skoolie. It hasn’t been as fun as people on YouTube make it look, but I’ve learned a lot, and now that the leaks are fixed (FINALLY!) I’m hoping we’ll start having fun. Eventually I hope to spend my time exploring while visiting friends and family across the country. You can follow along with the build on Instagram @juniper_the_bus.
YMM: What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
JS:
Auditioning for Les Misérables at Keyano. My personal life was going through a lot of upheaval and drastic changes, but I pushed myself way out of my comfort zone. Going to the audition and singing in front of strangers was so scary but I quickly learned that everyone was there to build you up and cheer you on. The whole process got me through the toughest chapter of my life and gave me great memories and friends, as well as confidence and determination when I needed it the most. It honestly changed my life and I encourage anyone who might have a desire to audition for a show, to do it, you won’t regret it.
YMM: What accomplishments are you most proud of?
JS:
Besides my amazing kids, completing my Sexual Health Educator training. I’m now working through my practicum requirements to become certified and can’t wait to start offering community classes. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I finally made it a reality.
YMM: What motivates you?
JS:
Sharing the things I know. What’s the point of having knowledge of a subject if you don’t share that knowledge?
YMM: What’s the best advice you have ever received?
JS:
If you think you’re too old to do something, you’re wrong. Time will pass whether you do the thing or not, so just do it.
