Kelsey Skolovy

A Catalyst for Community Wellness and Growth

CLASS OF 2024

Kelsey Skolovy is a name that resonates with inspiration, strength, and community spirit in Fort McMurray. Originally from Enderby, British Columbia, Kelsey made the move to this vibrant community in September 2008, seeking new opportunities alongside her sister. Today, as the owner of 5Fit Functional Training, Kelsey dedicates her life to helping others discover their strength and confidence, both physically and mentally.

With a background in Human Resources from Keyano College, Kelsey transitioned into fitness and personal training, a career path fueled by her lifelong involvement in organized sports. “The rewarding aspects of my job are truly endless,” she shares. “Helping people gain strength and confidence in themselves is the best part. When they suddenly realize their ability to do things they didn’t start out believing they could, they beam with pride.”

As the President of the Fort McMurray Women’s So-pitch League and a dedicated supporter of the SPCA, Kelsey actively volunteers her time in various capacities. She also contributes to the community through various sports programs and youth athlete conditioning. At Miskanaw Golf Club, Kelsey sponsors and endorses women’s golf, aiming to expand opportunities for female golfers of all ages to engage with the sport. Her efforts have not only elevated the profile of women’s golf in the community but have also provided a platform for mentorship and personal growth through athletics. “I believe sports can be a powerful avenue for building confidence and fostering connections, and I want to see more women experience that through golf,” she says.

“I inspire people to find their physical and mental apex through fitness and healthy living,” she explains, underscoring her commitment to being a catalyst for self-improvement and well-being.

Kelsey credits her supportive circle of friends and family as the driving force behind her decision to start her own business. “When I decided to change my career path, they backed me completely,” she recalls. This encouragement not only influenced her journey but also motivated her to pass along that same support to others in the community. “Supportive and positive attitudes are contagious,” she asserts. “Once you start leaning into that energy, more people follow suit to get involved in positive ways.”

Her natural inclination to give back stems from her background in sports and fitness. Kelsey believes that community involvement is vital to fostering a supportive environment. “When I started this journey, I was very nervous. It was uncharted territory for me, and I hoped to see my hard work and dedication pay off,” she admits. The overwhelming support she received from the community after launching 5Fit has inspired her to continue helping others experience the same sense of encouragement.

Despite her optimism, Kelsey is aware of the challenges facing Fort McMurray. “I have seen many changes in this community, both in times of growth and in recession,” she notes. The decline in population due to various factors, including changes in the workforce and the shifting landscape of employment opportunities, has made it difficult for personal services to thrive. “It’s a very complex problem that does not have a simple solution,” she reflects. Kelsey emphasizes the importance of community support for local businesses, advocating for collective efforts to ensure their success.

Kelsey envisions a future for Fort McMurray that transcends its traditional identity as an oil and gas town. “While that industry is a major driving force behind our prosperity, I want to show everyone that there are plenty of opportunities to develop and grow a business outside of that facet,” she explains. Through her own journey, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams and explore the diverse opportunities available within the region.

Being nominated as one of the Top 50 Under 50 fills Kelsey with pride and gratitude. “I am honoured to be among these other wonderful community members,” she says. Her commitment to strengthening her ties within the community and finding more opportunities to give back reflects her belief in the extraordinary potential of Fort McMurray and its residents.

Kelsey Skolovy is more than just a business owner; she is a beacon of positivity and a driving force for wellness in her community. Through her work and unwavering dedication, she is helping to shape a brighter future for Fort McMurray, inspiring others to embrace their potential and contribute to the growth and prosperity of the region.
