Michael Haberoth
Firefighter/Paramedic, Canadian Natural Resources
CLASS OF 2023
, AGE 39
Now, as a firefighter/paramedic at Canadian Natural Resources, his perfect day in our region is spent in the backcountry with his friends, family, dogs, or by himself. YMM: What is the most rewarding part of your career? MH: The most rewarding part of my career is helping others in the community and learning about the Wood Buffalo region. YMM: Who is your hero, and why? MH: A friend Patrick who passed away a few years back. The work he did in his career and his daily life left anyone who knew him to be driven and passionate about anything they are part of. His ability to open his home and life to anyone was astounding. YMM: What do you consider to be the best thing about our community? MH: The community and volunteer involvement in the region continues to grow. It is impressive to see how many young people taking initiative. Also, the fact both my wife and I can work in our professions; there are many opportunities available. YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of? MH: Establishing Ride North Moto. It started as an adventure on the winter ice road to Fort Smith that has now turned into five successful trips. We have hosted two summer events, The Boreal Royale, and the off-road community in the Wood Buffalo region keeps growing. YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years? MH: I went from trying to participate in activities to now trying to create the adventures and activities. Being able to help people take part in something they never thought was possible has been very rewarding. YMM: What is the best advice that you ever received? MH: To try and be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Also, to talk to everyone and anyone willing to have a conversation. YMM: What is something that people are always surprised to learn about you? MH: That I have driven to Baja Mexico three times from Fort McMurray, including my last trip this spring where we ended up in San Jose Del Cabo. YMM: What is the biggest challenge you’ve taken on this year? MH: Personally, it was racing my bike in Baja Mexico over 2,200km this past April. Having friends and family help with support made it possible. YMM: What is one challenge that you’d like to tackle in 2024? MH: I would like to create a new adventure race in our region with a few community partners. The ball is already in motion, and it should be a big success. YMM: What does community mean to you? MH: Community means like-minded individuals working together to create and maintain a common goal. YMM: What are you most grateful for? MH: I am most grateful for my wife and family. YMM: What motivates you? MH: Helping others, and creating memories for our children motivates me. Also, having good stories from random adventures.
