Renee Manners

Arts and Culture Coordinator, RMWB

CLASS OF 2023

, AGE 39

Whether working in her role as Arts and Culture Coordinator for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, or as an artist and comedian, Renee will tell you that the most rewarding part of her career is making a positive impact in people’s lives. YMM: What keeps you in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo? RM: The opportunity and people. I have looked at trying out a new home and when I compare Fort McMurray to the other cities, they just can’t offer me what Fort McMurray can. As a single mom, I was able to support my son (with hard work, but there is a ton of work out there if you’re willing to do it) I could take him to a hockey game, baseball game, or football game….usually for free. There are so many amazing people and so much opportunity! YMM: In your opinion, in what areas does Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo need improvement? RM: Our reputation. Most people who have never spent time here have a bad impression of it. I’d love for them to see our home how we see it. Anyone who comes here, I try to show them our hidden gems. YMM: What motivates you? RM: My son and my pursuit of self-love motivate me. Growing up, my mom struggled to love herself. That was painful. I never want to put my son through that experience so I try to do the hard stuff to make sure I’m taking care of myself. I believe it is my life’s purpose to put an end to addictions and I think that is done through understanding grief and emotions. That motivates me. Maybe my mom would still be around if she could get to the bottom of what was causing her to lack self-love. YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years? RM: Ten years…from 30 to 40. My priorities have gone from quantity to quality. I am seeking higher quality relationships, more passion in my jobs, and spending time with my loved ones. Also, check-ups are a lot different now. Jiujitsu and comedy have both impacted and become a major priority in my life. My son is growing up so that part of my life functions differently. It’s pretty wild when you sit back and think about it! YMM: How should success be measured? RM: I think if you are successful it’s impossible to measure. Success is the ripple effect of positivity you can create. The farther the reach the more impact. YMM: Who is your hero, and why? RM: I have a few heroes. I have been blessed to have strong, successful businesswomen/moms who are a few years ahead of me. They have been available to me throughout the years, and often come out of nowhere when I need a little nudge the most. I hope they know who they are. It’s been imperative in my life success to have such incredible role models in my corner. Growing up I saw a lot of what not to do, so once I got out of that I needed to know what direction to go and those women stepped up for me.
