YMM: What keeps you in Fort McMurray? (What do you consider to be the best things about the community?)
TD: When starting the business, our family could have chosen to live anywhere working online. We decided to stay in Fort McMurray because our little girls are thriving here, and there are great community activities for them to enjoy.
YMM: In your opinion, in what areas does Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo need improvement?
TD: Our working community is working on improving our hiring and workplace culture practices, but it’s come a long way since I first came here in 2005. There’s no finish line in that race, and we need to keep making inroads on creating truly inclusive workplaces to meet our current labour challenges. It’s important to note that inclusivity in the workplace doesn’t just mean diversity in your team members, although that’s a great photo op. Real inclusion means finding ways to include a diverse workforce in your decision-making process.
YMM: What does community mean to you?
TD: Community means people looking for one another and doing the right things for the right reasons for one another.
YMM: Describe your perfect day in YMM.
TD: Sleeping in, getting my exercise in, and taking my girls swimming at Mac Island.
YMM: What motivates you?
TD: My family is the biggest motivator, easily. Coming in a close second is paying forward knowledge and experience from my Disney education to help organizations and job seekers achieve things they didn’t think they could.
YMM: For what are you most grateful?
TD: My family, wife, and little girls. Coming in second is the opportunity to help people navigate the labour market.
