Andrew Swagers
Championing Baseball and Community in Fort McMurray
CLASS OF 2024
When Andrew Swagers moved to Fort McMurray in October 2015, he brought a lifelong passion for sports, specifically baseball. With a Master’s in Sports Administration from East Central University and a wealth of experience as a player and coach, Andrew’s relocation to be Executive Director for Fort McMurray Minor Baseball began a significant chapter for him and the community. Fast-forward to today, Andrew is the General Manager of the Fort McMurray Giants Baseball Club, where he continues to inspire and unite the community through his love for the sport.
For Andrew, baseball is more than just a game; it’s a way to foster unity, support young athletes, and contribute to the community’s growth. “One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career is the opportunity to impact numerous families positively,” he says. From helping young players earn scholarships to building an environment where the entire community can rally behind the Giants, Andrew is committed to ensuring baseball remains a vibrant part of Fort McMurray’s cultural fabric.
Andrew’s vision goes beyond the field in his role with the Giants. He is dedicated to creating an atmosphere where families can do more than just watch a game; they can feel a deep sense of pride in their community. “My objective is to establish a distinguished atmosphere and program, transcending the mere act of spectatorship,” Andrew explains. His work aims to transform baseball into a shared experience that unites Fort McMurray in support of its athletes, coaches, and community.
But Andrew’s contributions to the region extend beyond the diamond. He and his wife, Marina, are passionate volunteers within the local youth sports community, dedicating their time to coaching, board service, and offering strategic support for various sports initiatives. “The RMWB community greatly values the spirit of volunteerism,” Andrew notes. “Whether it involves coaching or providing consultative support, we are committed to contributing to the community.” Andrew’s involvement in youth sports reflects his belief in the power of community, a faith deeply rooted in his family and support network.
At the heart of Andrew’s journey is his wife, Marina, whom he describes as a source of endless inspiration. “Her selflessness and proactive approach to assisting is commendable,” he says. Together, they have built a robust support system that extends well beyond their family to include the broader baseball community. Over two decades, Andrew has fostered a network of relationships that enrich his professional life and provide valuable insights and innovative ideas that help him support the growth of sports in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).
Looking ahead, Andrew has ambitious goals for both himself and the community. Professionally, he aims to continue advancing the development of a baseball-centered community event in collaboration with the Giants, one that offers more than just a game—it provides an experience that brings Fort McMurray together. He focuses on being a devoted husband and father, ensuring he is present for his family when they need him most. “Being present when I am needed will always be something I can take pride in,” Andrew says.
Andrew is optimistic despite the community’s challenges, particularly regarding its location. He sees the hesitation of other regions to travel to Fort McMurray as an opportunity to showcase what makes the area unique. “Hosting national events allows us to showcase our exceptional facilities and our entire community,” he explains. Andrew believes that by consistently hosting these events, Fort McMurray can attract greater attention and support from provincial and national organizations.
In the future, Andrew hopes to continue contributing to the growth of baseball in the region. With over 1,000 young baseball players thriving in the community, the Fort McMurray Giants Baseball Club inspires aspiring athletes. “The Giants offer these young athletes the chance to imagine themselves playing for their hometown team in front of an audience of 1,500 spectators,” Andrew says with pride.
Andrew Swagers is deeply committed to his family and Fort McMurray as a husband, father, and community leader. His passion for baseball and dedication to the community ensures that he will continue to make a lasting impact, not only on the field but also in the lives of everyone who calls Fort McMurray home.
