Darren Yee
Building Confidence, One Match at a Time
CLASS OF 2025
Born and raised in Fort McMurray, Darren Yee has dedicated his life to both science and sport—two worlds that, in his eyes, share the same foundation of curiosity, discipline, and growth. By day, Darren works as a Senior Chemist at Suncor – Syncrude Mildred Lake, applying precision and analytical thinking to complex challenges. By night and weekend, he channels that same energy into badminton, a lifelong passion that has shaped not only his personal journey but also the lives of countless young athletes across the region.
For more than a decade, Darren has been deeply involved with the Arctic Winter Games as both Head Coach and Sports Coordinator, preparing athletes to perform at their very best on the international stage. Coaching at the 2023 and 2024 Arctic Winter Games was especially meaningful. Every member of his team earned an ulu (medal) in individual events, a proud reflection of their collective hard work, dedication, and team spirit. “The most rewarding part of my badminton journey has been witnessing the growth of young athletes, both on and off the court,” Darren shares. “Knowing I’ve helped them build confidence, develop life skills, and achieve their goals makes every hour spent coaching, officiating, or organizing tournaments deeply fulfilling.”
Beyond his coaching roles, Darren has played an instrumental part in shaping the local and provincial landscape for badminton. He served as Badminton Co-Chair for both the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games and the 2018 Alberta Winter Games, and today he continues to lead as a Badminton Alberta Board Member representing Northeastern Alberta, and as a member of the Badminton Canada National Officials Committee. His influence reaches from grassroots programs to national governance, ensuring that the next generation of athletes has access to quality coaching, structured competition, and opportunities for growth.
Darren’s officiating experience extends beyond the national stage. As a PanAm Certified Umpire, he has officiated at international events such as the 2025 World Junior Championships in India, bringing global standards and experience back to the community.
His dedication to excellence in sport was recently recognized when he received the Official of the Year Award at the 2024 Multi Sports Awards, presented by the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and the Wood Buffalo Sport Connection.
Darren’s involvement in sport is deeply personal; it’s part of his family legacy. “My family has long been actively involved in badminton and community initiatives,” he explains. “Their support and example have been instrumental in my commitment to coaching and officiating. Seeing the positive impact that engagement has had on our family motivates me to provide similar opportunities and support to the next generation.”
His own journey began at age six, when local coaches introduced him to the sport that would become a lifelong passion. The mentorship, patience, and encouragement he received as a young athlete have driven him to give back to the community that gave him so much. “I was fortunate to grow up with dedicated local coaches who created opportunities that shaped my life,” Darren says. “My motivation to give back comes from wanting the next generation to have the same access to badminton opportunities I was fortunate to receive.”
Looking ahead, Darren hopes to lead Team Alberta North as Head Coach at the 2026 Arctic Winter Games, continuing the team’s strong tradition of success. Each new Games brings a unique group of athletes with their own goals and challenges, and his mission is to help them build confidence, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that endure far beyond the competition.
Darren also believes that the future of community sport depends on investing in the people who make it possible. “It’s not enough to simply offer opportunities,” he explains. “They need to be delivered by individuals who are trained, supported, and genuinely committed to making a difference.”
Through his leadership, Darren has seen firsthand how sport can foster both individual character and collective pride. “Badminton has been part of my life since childhood, and it continues to be a way for me to give back to the community that raised me,” he says. “Whether through coaching, officiating, or organizing, my focus has always been on creating opportunities for youth to succeed, not only in sport but in life.”
A lifelong journey in badminton, from grassroots coaching to international officiating, shaping futures and opening doors for youth through sport and leadership. For Darren Yee, it’s not just about the game; it’s about inspiring confidence, nurturing community, and helping others discover their potential, one match at a time.
