Protecting People, Strengthening Community, and Leading with Purpose

CLASS OF 2025

, 16 YEAR RESIDENT

For Devin Lanthier, safety isn’t just part of the job; it’s a calling rooted in care, connection, and community. As the Corporate Health and Safety Manager for Thompson Construction Group, Devin’s work goes far beyond policies and procedures. Every risk assessment, every training session, and every conversation about safety represents something much larger: the collective responsibility to protect one another.

“The most rewarding part of being a Health and Safety Professional is knowing that you, your team, and your company have a hand in directly protecting people and their well-being,” he says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see workplace culture evolve where safety becomes second nature and everyone goes home unharmed at the end of the day.”

Originally from Montreal, Devin has called Fort McMurray home for 16 years, a place that, in his words, has given him a sense of belonging he couldn’t have imagined. His role at Thompson Construction Group has allowed him to help shape not only safe workplaces but also a safer, stronger community. Over the years, he’s become a driving force within the Regional Safety Committee of Wood Buffalo (RSCWB), serving as both a member and an executive.

“Being part of such an incredible committee, made up of people who share a genuine drive to foster health and safety awareness, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Devin says. Through the RSCWB’s initiatives, he’s been involved in events like Steps for Life, the National Day of Mourning, Family Safety Day, and Halloween Safety Awareness. The committee also supports charitable causes such as the HERO Foundation, the Center of Hope, Waypoints, and the Fort McMurray Food Bank.

For Devin, these initiatives represent what makes Fort McMurray truly special. “This is a one-of-a-kind community,” he says. “From the larger corporations to the locally owned businesses, there’s such a strong culture of giving back here. It’s something that inspired me from the moment I arrived.”

That inspiration has been reinforced by the people around him: his family, mentors, and colleagues. He credits much of his perspective to his time at Thompson Construction Group, where he’s been part of the team for over 16 years. “I was lucky enough to start my career with a company owned by Larry Thompson,” he says. “I’ve never met a more generous, philanthropically spirited, and personally dedicated individual and family. Larry and his family later started the Thompson Family Foundation to continue that legacy, and being part of a company that values community involvement the way ours does has had a huge impact on how I see the world.”

That philosophy of service runs deep. Volunteering, Devin says, has always been part of who he is. “I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility not just to be present, but to contribute in meaningful ways,” he explains. “Supporting local initiatives, helping create spaces where people feel seen and heard, or simply showing up when it matters most. Real change starts with small, consistent acts of care.”

Devin’s sentiment, “Move forward with purpose, listen with care, and act with humility,” perfectly captures his approach to life and leadership. Whether he’s in a boardroom discussing policy, out in the field ensuring safety standards, or volunteering at a local event, he leads with compassion and quiet strength.

He also believes deeply in celebrating others. When asked about being named to Your McMurray Magazine’s Top 50 Under 50, he’s quick to share the spotlight. “I know that 50 is an impossible number to capture all those deserving of recognition,” he says. “There are so many people in Fort McMurray who never seek recognition but make this community what it is. I share this honour with them.”

Reflecting on the role that volunteering plays in his life, Devin shares a quote that has stayed with him since childhood: “If you want to do the most selfish thing you can, volunteer—it feels amazing.”

It’s a sentiment that sums up who he is: a leader who finds fulfillment not in accolades, but in impact. Through his work, his volunteerism, and his example, Devin Lanthier continues to make Fort McMurray a safer, more caring place to call home.
