Jacqui Parlee
Quietly Supporting Behind the Scenes
CLASS OF 2025
For Jacqui Parlee, community is not just where you live; it’s something you help build, nurture, and sustain. As the Development & Stakeholder Relations Officer with the Northern Lights Health Foundation, Jacqui has made it her mission to ensure that everyone in the Wood Buffalo region has access to the best possible healthcare.
“Before joining the Health Foundation, I didn’t fully understand its impact,” she shares. “That changed when I needed spinal surgery. My surgeon told me he had the best equipment available, thanks to the Foundation. In that moment, so much of my fear was replaced by relief.”
That experience became a defining moment for Jacqui, awakening a deeper understanding of how philanthropy changes lives and strengthening her desire to be part of that impact. Now, she channels that gratitude into every project she touches, helping bring vital resources, state-of-the-art equipment, and meaningful programs to the community she calls home.
Originally from Saint John, New Brunswick, and raised in Whitby, Ontario, Jacqui moved to Fort McMurray 11 years ago when her husband, Matty, was recruited as a Children’s Pastor. “It was a scary journey into the unknown—no family, no friends nearby,” she recalls. “But there’s something special about Fort McMurray. The community here understands that feeling of starting fresh, and that shared experience creates a strong bond among us.”
Over the years, Jacqui has woven herself into the fabric of that community through countless volunteer efforts. Whether serving meals with YWAM at the Soup Kitchen, painting walls at the BGC, assisting the Royal Canadian Legion’s fundraising initiatives, or helping lead the Westwood Community High School Parent Music Committee as Chair, she is often found working quietly behind the scenes, ensuring things run smoothly and people feel supported.
She’s also an active member of All Nations Church, where she helps children get settled into their classes each Sunday. “Giving back has always felt natural to us,” she says. “My husband and I were both raised in families that showed us the importance of being involved in our community. We’ve tried to lead by example for our daughters—and it’s been such a blessing to see them volunteer by choice, not obligation.”
At the Health Foundation, Jacqui’s work has placed her at the heart of some of the region’s most transformative initiatives – projects designed to make an impact not just today, but for generations to come. Among them is the Better Together Project, which is helping create an Indigenous Wellness Space at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. Supported by the Health Foundation and its generous donors, this initiative is both important and deeply meaningful. “To be part of something that celebrates cultural connection and healing is a privilege,” she shares.
Looking ahead, Jacqui is eager to contribute to an upcoming hospital project that holds a personal connection and deep significance for her. While details remain under wraps for now, her enthusiasm is unmistakable. “To play a role in something that will strengthen care for our community and shape its future is an honour.”
Jacqui’s outlook on community involvement has been shaped by both her professional journey and her personal faith. “Being involved isn’t a task—it’s a calling,” she reflects. “Even quiet contributions can make a lasting impact. I’ve seen the strength of a community that comes together to support one another, and I want to help keep that spirit alive.”
As someone who experienced firsthand the power of compassion and collective effort, Jacqui is deeply aware of both the strengths and challenges Fort McMurray faces today. “After the fire, we were more united than ever—we were Fort Mac Strong. But lately, it feels like there’s a quiet disconnection,” she says. “We can’t afford to be strangers. We need to lead with kindness, support one another, and be good neighbours. Our strength has always come from showing up for each other.”
Whether she’s coordinating fundraising efforts, volunteering at a local event, or simply lending a listening ear, Jacqui embodies the quiet resilience and generosity that define the heart of Fort McMurray.
And though she might shy away from the spotlight, her light shines brightly through every life she touches.
“I’m incredibly honoured (and slightly panicked) to be recognized,” she laughs.
