CLASS OF 2022

, AGE 29

Jennifer Vardy is the Director of Government Relations & External Affairs for Fort McKay Métis nation.

She creates meaningful change through the relationship she builds within her career, and finds seeing firsthand the impact she has on the people she serves to be the most rewarding part of what she does. She recently chatted with YMM about the advice she’s received, her priorities, and more.

YMM: What is the best advice that you ever received?

JV: I am a proud Leadership Wood Buffalo Alumni. I spoke to our lead facilitator, Colin, about my imposter syndrome. For a long time, I felt that I was never qualified enough or competent enough for the positions I held, regardless of the degrees, accolades or praises I received. He said to me one day, “There is nothing anyone will say or give you that will make you feel like you are enough. The only person who can make the distinction is you. I think you’re great, but what I think doesn’t matter.”

YMM: What is the worst advice that you ever received?

JV: When I was campaigning for RMWB Councillor, I spoke with many past and present politicians. The worst advice was, “Ride the fence for as long as possible. As a woman in politics, people will like you more.” I didn’t get into politics to be liked. I wanted to be a decision- maker because we need more outspoken, passionate women that say, “No, that’s not ok, and here is why.” I am many things, but silent is not one of them.

YMM: How would friends and acquaintances describe you?

JV: I believe my friends who say I am funny and authentic with my compassion for others. They would tell you I am a hard worker, but I also need to know when to take a breather and smell the metaphorical roses.

YMM: For what are you most grateful?

JV: I am most grateful for my support system. I have grown a lot in the past seven years, and it is because I am in an environment where I can be my authentic and true self. I am surrounded by people who love and respect me.

YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years?

JV: Ten years ago, I was only 19. Then, my priorities were solely for myself. Now, I have a family and am part of our community. I have gone from my priorities being only looking after myself to then becoming a mom and focusing on everyone else, and now as I enter my 30s trying to find the balance of both.
