JD: Being able to help others is the most rewarding part of my career. Whether it’s through volunteering, activism, or humanitarian work, it always fills me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It feels good to know that I’m making a difference and contributing to something greater than myself. It’s also important to give back to the community and do what we can to make the world a better place. For me, that’s what my career is all about. YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of? JD: As an RCIC, I am proud that my expertise and experience in the field have allowed me to confidently guide and assist those seeking to navigate the complex immigration process. YMM: What would you say to your 12-year-old self? JD: Life is never easy, and when life knocks you down, give yourself time to self-pity and lament. Then, dust yourself off, move ahead, use your failure to cultivate the power within you and rise like a phoenix. YMM: How have your priorities changed in the last 10 years? JD: Over the past 10 years, my priorities have changed multiple times. Initially, I planned to return to my home country at the end of my contract. However, that plan didn’t come to fruition. Instead, I moved my family to Canada and started a new career. I studied immigration, became an RCIC, and launched an immigration consulting business. This journey has taught me that embracing change and being adaptable can lead to unexpected and exciting opportunities. We should always be courageous to adjust our goals to keep up with the ever-evolving world. YMM: What keeps you in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo? JD: In real talk! My work, comfort, and familiarity with this community have me rooted here. There are many other interesting reasons, like its abundant natural resources and vibrant cultural heritage. But the most admirable about this community is its unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity. It is a safe and welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds, making it an ideal place for everyone to live. I love the people’s resiliency, and their acts of kindness and generosity are truly heartwarming. They are always eager to help those in need and embody the spirit of community.Another appealing fact is the community’s geographical size; it is easier to navigate. Whether it’s public transportation, driving, or even just walking, getting around is relatively stress-free. YMM: What does community mean to you? JD: Community to me means a family. Like a family, people in the community may be diverse in all aspects, but they come together to celebrate, help and support each other, especially in times of tragedy, calamity or needs. YMM: Who is your hero, and why? JD: My hero is my father. He is the first man I have ever loved. He is the most calm, selfless, and kind person I’ve ever seen. He is my great teacher, provider, supporter, protector, and best friend. YMM: What is the worst advice that you ever received? JD: “You can’t do it, just quit.” This was one of the worst pieces of advice I had ever received from a friend. She could have been more encouraging and motivating. Instead, she validated my self-doubt. This experience taught me the importance of seeking advice from the right people and how a single piece of advice can impact one’s life. YMM: What is something that people are always surprised to learn about you? JD: That I am an activist. It seems contradictory that I am an activist because I am bashful and often feel apprehensive about speaking up or acting in certain situations. YMM: What are you most grateful for? JD: My heart is filled with gratitude for the abundant blessings in my life. The unwavering support of my loved ones, the fulfillment I derive from my job, and the warm embrace of my community all serve as a constant reminder of the incredible beauty and joy that exist in this world. With a heart filled with wisdom and an unshakeable resolve, I am inspired to seek out and celebrate every opportunity for growth, happiness, and fulfillment that life offers.
