, AGE 41
, 16 YEAR RESIDENT
At 41, Jessie Stecyk has established herself as a vital force in Fort McMurray, blending her passion for community engagement with her role as the owner/operator of Tavern on Main. Originally from Lethbridge, Alberta, Jessie has called Fort McMurray home for the past 16 years, and she has dedicated herself to creating meaningful connections in this vibrant community.
For Jessie, the most rewarding part of her career is watching new patrons transform into regulars at her establishment. “I get to watch in real-time how meetings turn into connections, then turn into impactful moments in someone’s life,” she explains. “Some of the biggest things start with a simple ‘hello’ over a pint, and I’m convinced a few of YMM’s best stories have begun right here at Tavern.”
Jessie’s commitment to her community extends beyond her business. She actively volunteers at her daughters’ school, supporting educators and participating in fundraising efforts. “Popping popcorn for a fundraiser or lending a hand on field trips is always time well spent,” she shares. One of her favourite ways to give back is by using Tavern as a venue for fundraisers, offering her space and resources to help them succeed. “I enjoy connecting the right people to make sure the fundraiser hits higher levels of success than originally anticipated,” she adds.
Family is at the heart of Jessie’s community involvement. With two beautiful daughters, she is motivated to foster a strong, healthy community that provides opportunities for them. “It’s important for me to help create a supportive environment around them,” she says. She and her partner recently became business owners in downtown Fort McMurray, a move that reflects their dedication to revitalizing the area. “We couldn’t be more excited to be a small part of making downtown great again,” Jessie states.
Jessie’s journey in Fort McMurray was profoundly shaped by the 2016 wildfire that affected so many in the region, including her family. “In a time that seemed so uncertain and scary, there were neighbours and communities ready to lend a hand,” she recalls. This experience deepened her appreciation for community support and highlighted the importance of lending a hand to those in need. “The stories of helping and receiving help have made me realize how vital it is to be involved when you can,” she emphasizes.
Looking to the future, Jessie has both personal and professional aspirations. Personally, she aims to focus on her health and sustainability, envisioning a small garden that reflects her commitment to a balanced lifestyle. Professionally, she is eager to grow in her role at Tavern on Main, having transitioned from bartending to managing the business. “I’d like to look back in a few years and feel proud of the steps I’ve taken to get where I am,” she shares. Jessie is determined to keep challenging herself while continuing to give back to her community.
As she identifies some of the most pressing challenges facing Fort McMurray, such as youth engagement and public safety, Jessie believes proactive solutions are essential. “Continuing to offer a variety of youth programs can empower young people and keep them connected to our community,” she suggests. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of crime and finding opportunities for affordable living.
Jessie sees her role in contributing to Fort McMurray’s future as a blend of business and community advocacy. “I hope to have a voice in growing Fort McMurray’s downtown business center and to be a part of tourism,” she explains, expressing her enthusiasm for promoting the community’s offerings.
In closing, Jessie reflects on her gratitude for the opportunities Fort McMurray has provided her over the years. “So many wonderful things in my life have happened because I moved here,” she states. With a bright vision for her future and a commitment to community connection, Jessie Stecyk continues to be a beacon of positivity and engagement in Fort McMurray.
