As an educator with the Fort McMurray Public School Division and a committed community advocate, Jihan has spent over a decade sharing her love for learning and fostering connections among residents. Born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in Toronto, Jihan’s journey to Fort McMurray began in 2009 when she was recruited by the school division. Her educational background includes a BA in Political Science and History, a BEd, and an MEd, with her sights set on completing her PhD. “My goal is to share my passion for knowledge with youth while supporting their dreams,” she shares. This dedication to nurturing the next generation is the cornerstone of her career.

The most rewarding part of Jihan’s work lies in the relationships she builds with her students. “I believe education is more than just textbooks; it’s about understanding and supporting each individual’s journey,” she explains. Her teaching philosophy is deeply intertwined with her volunteer efforts, which range from being a fitness instructor at the YMCA to participating in community clean-ups and serving as a guest lecturer at Keyano College. “I am committed to being an active participant in my community,” she asserts, reflecting her belief that education and community involvement go hand in hand.

Jihan’s dedication to the community extends beyond her classroom. As Vice President of the United for Change Association and an active member of various local initiatives, she has worked tirelessly to elevate the voices of community members. “I believe in fostering authentic connections within our community,” she emphasizes. This belief drives her to engage in events that celebrate cultural diversity, such as Black History Month and African Liberation Day. She is particularly proud of her role as an MC for events that honour these celebrations, as they promote understanding and unity.

A key motivator for Jihan is her strong family support network. Together with her husband and children, she has embraced the local culture and gained a deeper understanding of Treaty 8 land. “This community has taught us so much about our connections to one another,” she reflects. Her family’s commitment to community echoes through her work, inspiring her to seek meaningful opportunities for engagement.

Looking ahead, Jihan envisions a future filled with growth—both personally and professionally. She aims to continue her journey of lifelong learning, fostering relationships, and sharing her research at international symposiums. She also hopes to continue to write and publish children’s books, enriching the literary landscape for young readers. “My ultimate goal is to help create a thriving community where everyone feels connected and valued,” she explains.

Jihan acknowledges the challenges facing Fort McMurray, particularly the need for open dialogue and understanding among residents. “We must listen to each other and appreciate our diverse perspectives,” she says. Her approach to community engagement emphasizes the importance of authentic interactions and collective understanding.
