CLASS OF 2024

, 8 YEAR RESIDENT

Since 2016, Jonathan Davies has called Fort McMurray home, having moved from Vancouver to be closer to his partner’s family and explore new opportunities. Initially, he and his partner planned to stay for only two years, but eight years later, they are still here, captivated by the warmth of the community and the unique blend of small-town sensibilities with big-city potential. Coming from Merritt, BC, a town of just 7,000, Jonathan quickly found Fort McMurray’s sense of community appealing and its vibrant opportunities hard to resist.

Jonathan’s background is steeped in scientific achievement. He holds an undergraduate degree in Honours Genetics from the University of British Columbia and conducted his graduate research at the BC Cancer Research Centre. During this time, he developed new technologies that have significantly contributed to the fields of cancer epigenomics and genome mapping. His work, published in journals like Nature Genetics, shed light on fundamental changes in cancer formation, pushing the boundaries of what we know about cancer biology.

Today, Jonathan serves as the Business Development Leader at United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo. His role allows him to combine his passion for innovation with community-focused work, leading initiatives that directly benefit the region. He finds great fulfillment in building partnerships and running campaigns that provide lasting support to the community. “Seeing how both innovation and community work can drive meaningful change has been incredibly rewarding,” he shares. His transition from the lab to nonprofit leadership was driven by the same determination to create a positive impact.

Jonathan’s community involvement extends beyond his professional role. He serves as Treasurer for Pride YMM, where he champions inclusivity and supports the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. His leadership role at Pride YMM allows him to advocate for a more inclusive and supportive environment in Fort McMurray. Additionally, through his work with United Way, he collaborates with over 20 nonprofit organizations, connecting people and resources to essential services. “It’s inspiring to see the dedication of our front-line nonprofit workers and the tangible impact their efforts have on our community,” he says.

Reflecting on the challenges Fort McMurray faces, Jonathan highlights the need for better access to critical services, particularly mental health and social support. He believes that collaborative efforts between nonprofits, local businesses, and government are essential to addressing these needs. By fostering partnerships, increasing funding, and encouraging open communication, he aims to ensure that vital services remain accessible and sustainable for all residents.

Looking to the future, Jonathan is committed to deepening United Way’s impact and mentoring emerging leaders who can continue to shape Fort McMurray’s development. He aims to develop long-term, sustainable programs that address the community’s evolving needs. “Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with collaboration and a focus on long-term goals, we can make a real difference,” he asserts. His experience in cancer research taught him the importance of patience and teamwork, qualities he now applies to community leadership.

A self-described problem-solver, Jonathan’s personal mantra—”There’s no such thing as an easy answer—Good thing I’m stubborn”—captures his persistence in tackling challenges, whether in the lab or in the community. He credits his support network, including family, mentors, and lifelong friends, for giving him the confidence to take on new challenges. He often reflects on the words of Isaac Newton: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,” expressing gratitude for those who have guided him along the way.

While Jonathan’s career began with cutting-edge research in cancer genomes, he’s found a new sense of fulfillment in community leadership. He brings the same drive for innovation and problem-solving to his work at United Way, striving to create meaningful change in Fort McMurray. Known for his positive attitude and sense of humour, Jonathan uses humour to navigate difficult moments, bringing a silver-lining perspective that uplifts those around him. He is excited about the future and remains dedicated to ensuring that Fort McMurray continues to be a place where everyone can thrive.

Jonathan Davies is not only a leader focused on progress but also a proud member of a resilient community. As he continues to build stronger connections and drive impactful change, he remains an integral part of Fort McMurray’s story.
