Justin and Kelli Brown’s story is one of resilience, community spirit, and a determination to live life to the fullest, even in the face of challenges. Justin, 42, originally from Newfoundland, moved to Fort McMurray as a teenager. He’s been part of the region for 28 years, drawn in by the opportunities and the sense of belonging that the community offered. Kelli, 36, arrived in Fort McMurray 17 years ago from British Columbia for work. Little did she know that Fort McMurray would become her home and the place where she’d build her life with Justin.
Today, the Browns are a power duo, balancing successful careers with an unwavering commitment to their community. Justin works as a Mine Supervisor at Syncrude, where his leadership on-site plays a critical role in daily operations. Kelli is a red seal journeyman Parts Technician with Finning, contributing her expertise to a company that is vital to Fort McMurray’s industrial backbone. They both agree that the most rewarding part of their work is the life it allows them to build together—a life rich with travel, music, and opportunities to make a difference.
While the Browns don’t engage in traditional volunteer work, their community involvement is evident in countless acts of kindness. They are active members of the “Sprinkle Kindness Like Confetti” group, consistently participating in initiatives like “Adopt a Senior” at Christmas and “Stockings for the Most Vulnerable”. Their generous spirits have been behind many, such as coat drives for the Centre of Hope, food bank donations, and support for the local SPCA. On cold days, you might find Justin driving around town, handing out hot coffees to those in need—a small gesture that reflects the couple’s big hearts. They also enjoy supporting many of the local events hosted in Fort McMurray, especially live music events by our amazing local talent. When asked what motivates their community involvement, Justin and Kelli emphasize the importance of being there for others, especially in a place like Fort McMurray that has experienced its share of hardships. “We’ve both been fortunate in our lives,” says Kelli. “It feels right to give back to a community that has given us so much.”
While Justin and Kelli are known for their community contributions, their journey took a dramatic turn in 2020 when Justin was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. It was a time of uncertainty and worry, but the couple faced it head-on. Justin’s strength and positive attitude through the ordeal became a source of inspiration for those around him. Despite the gruelling process of peritoneal dialysis, which he began in October 2022, the Browns didn’t let it hold them back. They continued to travel and enjoy live music, finding moments of joy and normalcy amid the challenges.
Kelli’s love and determination led her to take the ultimate step—seeing if she could be a donor match for Justin. After months of testing, they got the news in August 2023: Kelli was indeed a match. On April 17, 2024, the couple underwent the transplant surgery, a day that symbolized both a new beginning and the strength of their partnership. Justin’s recovery has been exceptional, far exceeding doctors’ expectations, a testament to his resilience and the unwavering support from Kelli.
Reflecting on their journey, Kelli shares, “Justin’s strength through all of this kept me going. Even when things were tough, he tried to live life as if he wasn’t sick. Many people didn’t even know what he was going through.” Their story has touched many, offering hope and a reminder of the power of love and determination.
Despite the trials they’ve faced, Justin and lli continue to look to the future with optimism and ambition. For them, life is about finding balance—between careers, family, community involvement, and their personal passions. They hope to keep exploring new places, catching live music shows, and sharing those experiences with the Fort McMurray community.
They understand the challenges facing their community, particularly in changing perceptions of Fort McMurray as more than just an “oil town.” The Browns believe that highlighting the area’s community spirit and unique opportunities is key to attracting and retaining families in the region.
Justin and Kelli’s approach to community involvement is rooted in their belief that small, consistent acts of kindness can make a big difference. Their experiences—both the joyful and the difficult—have shaped their understanding of the importance of a supportive community.
Through their work, acts of kindness and the way they live their lives, the Browns strive to set an example for others. “We hope that by staying involved, we’re showing our community that giving back is important,” they share.
As they continue to build their lives in Fort McMurray, Justin and Kelli remain dedicated to making a positive impact. They hope to see the community grow and thrive, with more families finding their home here, just as they did. Their journey, from navigating health challenges to making a difference through simple acts of kindness, is a testament to their strength and dedication to each other and their community.
Their story is not just about overcoming adversity; it’s about choosing to live fully, to give freely, and to be supportive of others. With a deep love for Fort McMurray, Justin and Kelli Brown embody the spirit of this resilient city, making them a true power duo.
