Justin Dollimont and Heidi Gould
Cultivating Wellness, Growth, and Connection in Fort McMurray
CLASS OF 2025
When Justin Dollimont first arrived in Fort McMurray in 2008, it was a pragmatic move; he came to find work to pay off student loans and other debts. What he couldn’t have predicted was that this northern city would become the canvas for his life’s work, a place where he could cultivate wellness, build community, and grow roots that would anchor both his family and his career. Originally from Milltown, Newfoundland, Justin brought with him a background in Environmental Science from Acadia University and a lifelong curiosity about natural health and holistic wellness.
“I’ve always been passionate about supporting people in taking ownership of their health,” Justin says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to meet someone on their first day at the studio, hear their story, and then watch their journey unfold. The magic happens when they discover what they’re capable of, physically, mentally, and emotionally.” This philosophy underpins his work as owner and operator of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, which he co-owns with his partner, Heidi Gould. Together, they’ve created a space where wellness is more than exercise; it’s a practice in self-care, community, and empowerment.
Heidi, originally from Pictou County, Nova Scotia, came to Fort McMurray 17 years ago to be with Justin and to pursue her dream career in public health nursing. Today, she serves as Manager of Fort McMurray Public Health – Primary Care Alberta while also co-owning Oxygen Yoga & Fitness. “I get to live my dream every day,” she says. “I work with an amazing team of professionals, and together, we shape programs and services that truly impact our community. Owning the yoga studio alongside Justin allows us to extend that impact beyond clinical care and into everyday life.”
The couple’s journey into wellness and community engagement started modestly but has grown into something remarkable. Justin’s first volunteer experience was with the Helen Pacholko Community Garden in 2009, where he witnessed firsthand how shared effort and stewardship could build both healthy food systems and stronger social ties. “Helping people grow their own food, teaching life skills, and providing a space for neighbours to connect…it was transformative,” he recalls. “It reinforced my belief that many of the problems we face today can be addressed with simple, thoughtful solutions.”
Heidi echoes that sentiment. From her early days volunteering with the Wood Buffalo and District Labour Council to organizing community events like Canada Day parades and Labour Day BBQs, she discovered that real change comes from showing up, listening, and building relationships. “It was never about checking off tasks,” she says. “It was about connecting with people, creating shared purpose, and seeing the tangible difference we could make together.”
Together, Justin and Heidi embody a philosophy of wellness that is holistic and inclusive. At Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, they introduce residents of all ages to practices that improve physical health, mental resilience, and community connection. Justin is particularly excited about expanding access to Reformer Pilates and Block Therapy in Fort McMurray, methods he believes can complement traditional yoga and fitness programs. “Our city has the power to be very healthy,” he says. “I want to do my part to make that happen, helping people take time for themselves so they can contribute more fully to the community around them.”
Heidi sees their studio as a bridge between individual well-being and broader community health. “In my dual role as a Public Health leader and studio owner, I can connect clinical care with holistic practices. It’s about giving people the tools, space, and guidance to thrive before challenges arise,” she explains. “When people take care of themselves, they can care more deeply for others. Community growth starts with the individual.”
Their dedication extends well beyond the studio. Justin and Heidi are involved in a range of volunteer initiatives, from supporting local food banks and the Festival of Trees to organizing community gardens that educate and inspire residents. “Every project we take on has layers of impact,” Justin notes. “It strengthens individual skills, builds connections among neighbours, and fosters a culture of giving back.” Heidi adds, “It’s the people—the volunteers, community leaders, and neighbours—that make these efforts meaningful. They remind me that leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about service, relationships, and shared vision.”
The couple’s commitment to community wellness is deeply personal as well. Justin credits Heidi’s unwavering support for the realization of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness. “I never could have done this alone,” he says. “Having someone believe in you wholeheartedly is critical. Together, we’ve created something that extends far beyond ourselves.” Heidi reflects on the same theme: “Our studio is a family-driven project. It has deepened our connection, not only as partners but as members of this community. Seeing the positive impact on our clients is incredibly fulfilling.”
Justin and Heidi also share a forward-looking vision for Fort McMurray. They recognize challenges:—perception issues, economic cycles, and access to resources—but they also see opportunity. Justin has a particular passion for food security and permaculture, envisioning a future where Fort McMurray could produce enough local food to feed the community for extended periods, fostering resilience and innovation. Heidi sees the potential to integrate health promotion, wellness programs, and community engagement into everyday life, creating a model where individual and collective well-being reinforce each other.
Their complementary strengths amplify their impact. Justin brings a keen understanding of natural health, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Heidi contributes her clinical expertise, leadership in public health, and a passion for creating inclusive spaces for learning and growth. Together, they mentor staff, inspire clients, and engage with residents in ways that are both practical and transformative.
Through it all, their work is grounded in gratitude and humility. Both acknowledge the support of family, colleagues, and the broader community, recognizing that their ability to make a difference is built on a network of care and collaboration. “We’ve been given so much by this community,” Justin says. “Being recognized in this way is humbling, but it also reminds us of the responsibility and opportunity to keep giving back.” Heidi adds, “It’s a joy to witness how small actions can ripple outward. Every person we engage, every initiative we support, contributes to a healthier, more connected Fort McMurray.”
Outside of their professional and volunteer commitments, Justin and Heidi embrace life fully, with family, pets, and shared passions. Their dog Birch, affectionately described as “the goodest boy in the city,” is a beloved member of their household and a reminder of the simple joys that sustain them. Together, they exemplify balance: dedication to community, pursuit of professional excellence, and the importance of personal connection and fun.
The impact of Justin and Heidi’s efforts is evident in countless ways, from the individuals who walk through their studio doors to the residents participating in community garden programs, volunteer initiatives, and public health campaigns. Their approach demonstrates that wellness is not just personal; it is collective. Healthy, engaged individuals build resilient, thriving communities. By investing in people through movement, nutrition, mentorship, and connection, Justin and Heidi are cultivating a culture of wellness that extends far beyond the walls of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness.
Ultimately, Justin and Heidi exemplify what it means to be community leaders in Fort McMurray. Their work shows that meaningful impact comes from combining professional expertise with passion, creativity, and a commitment to service. Whether welcoming someone into their first yoga class, organizing a community garden, or supporting public health initiatives, they continue to inspire, uplift, and empower those around them.
As Justin reflects, “When people take the time to fill their own cup, they have more to give. That’s how we grow our community—one person, one action, one moment at a time.” Heidi concurs, adding, “Leading with heart, healing through movement, and growing through connection—this is how we hope to contribute to the future of Fort McMurray. It’s a privilege and a joy to do it alongside each other and with the people we serve.”
Through their shared vision, dedication, and compassion, Justin and Heidi are shaping a Fort McMurray that values wellness, community, and opportunity, reminding us all that lasting change begins with people, passion, and the courage to show up.
