Building Community and Inspiring Growth Through Sports

CLASS OF 2024

Karly Anderson has spent the last seven years helping shape Fort McMurray’s sports community, driven by her belief in the power of sports to unite and inspire. Originally from Atikokan, Ontario, and has spent significant time in Northwestern Ontario and Winnipeg, Karly arrived in Fort McMurray in 2017, ready to make a difference. Since then, she’s become a key figure in the region’s sports development as the Executive Director of the Wood Buffalo Sport Connection Society.

With a strong academic foundation, including a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport and Fitness Leadership with a major in Sport Management and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Sport and Recreation Administration, Karly is passionate about creating opportunities for individuals and families to experience the benefits of sports. For Karly, the most rewarding aspect of her career is seeing the positive impact that sports have on both individuals and the broader community. “Whether it’s watching young athletes develop confidence and skills, seeing families engage and bond through sports events, or observing our community thrive from successful programs, these moments highlight the importance of building community through sport,” she says.

Karly’s love for sports and her drive to make a difference is something that was nurtured from an early age. Growing up in a family where both parents volunteered with Special Olympics Ontario for 25 years, Karly was exposed to the power of volunteerism and the impact it could have. This legacy of community involvement continued when Karly moved to Fort McMurray and saw an opportunity to help support the local chapter of Special Olympics. Inspired by her parents’ dedication and, passion for inclusive sport opportunities, she got involved, to help serve those in the region who needed it most.

Family plays a significant role in Karly’s approach to life and work. Her children are a constant source of motivation, and she is deeply committed to creating a vibrant, sports-filled community for them and other families in Fort McMurray. “We live in a young, vibrant community, and I want to ensure that Fort McMurray has the resources and programs necessary for our children to thrive in sports,” she explains. Her passion for building a supportive, inclusive sports environment has driven her to organize affordable family events and programs, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate, regardless of their background.

Karly’s involvement in the community extends beyond her role with the Sport Connection Society. She serves on the boards of both Special Olympics Wood Buffalo and Educare Preschool, further demonstrating her commitment to the well-being and development of local families and children. Her personal philosophy of giving back to the community has been shaped by her experiences, both as a professional in the sports industry and as a mother. “A community is only as strong as the dedication of its members,” Karly says, emphasizing the importance of active participation in creating a thriving, supportive environment.

Looking to the future, Karly has ambitious goals both personally and professionally. She is eager to pursue a Master’s degree in Sport Administration and hopes to travel more with her family, exposing her children to different cultures and sports experiences around the world. On a professional level, Karly is determined to make Fort McMurray a premier destination for sports. She aims to create a regional sports hub that overcomes the unique challenges of being a northern community, ensuring that families have access to the resources they need to pursue sports locally.

Her work in organizing events alongside her team like the Girls with Grit Sport Summit, the Multisport Awards Banquet, and the Wood Buffalo Sport Passport Program is a testament to her dedication. By bringing local sports organizations and the community together, Karly fosters a sense of connection, inclusion, and growth that benefits not only athletes but the entire community. “My goal is to create an environment where sports bring people together, celebrate our community, and drive the growth and development of the region,” she says.

Beyond her work in Fort McMurray, Karly has a deep passion for exploring sports globally. Her travels have taken her to Bolivia, where she participated in a study on the effects of high altitude on the body while trekking the Andes Mountains, and to China, where she helped develop recreational gymnastics programs. These experiences have enriched her understanding of sports and community development, shaping her approach to creating impactful programs in her own community.

Karly Anderson’s journey is one of passion, dedication, and a deep belief in the transformative power of sports. Through her work, she continues to build a stronger, more connected Fort McMurray, one game at a time.
