Katie Cooper

A Passion for Community, Hospitality, and Family

CLASS OF 2024

Katie Cooper’s journey to becoming a key player in Fort McMurray’s vibrant social and hospitality scene began with a simple yet powerful motivation: family. Born in Oshawa, Ontario, and raised in the close-knit community of Wareham, Newfoundland, Katie moved to Fort McMurray in 2009 to join family and friends who were already thriving in the region. Since then, she has built a life filled with personal and professional successes, becoming a cornerstone in the local hospitality industry and an active contributor to Fort McMurray’s community-focused initiatives.

Currently, Katie wears two important hats in her career. She is the owner of Black Dress Events, where she specializes in organizing celebrations that bring joy to others. She’s also the lunch manager and events coordinator at Earls, where she helps create exceptional dining experiences. For Katie, the most rewarding aspect of her work is the privilege of being a part of people’s most important moments. “I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing so many celebrations—engagements, weddings, graduations, retirements, celebrations of life, surprise parties, and more,” she says. “I never grow tired of helping create those memories.”

Katie’s natural talent for hospitality extends beyond her professional life. Over the past seven years, she has become a dedicated community volunteer, with much of her work driven by personal experience. In 2015, her oldest son, Austin, was diagnosed with autism, leading Katie to get involved with the Autism Society of Wood Buffalo. She quickly recognized the need for support within the society and took action, serving as the treasurer for five years. “I spent a lot of time leaning on the members of the board and found a passion in providing others with the same support I was given,” Katie reflects. Her commitment to community involvement deepened from there, and she now collaborates with the United Way and has recently joined the committee for Rock the Rails, a local youth event.

Katie’s love for Fort McMurray’s tight-knit community is what initially inspired her to dive into local initiatives. “After living in a few larger cities, I really felt like a face in the crowd,” she shares. “Wood Buffalo is so tight-knit and generous. You’re able to get to know people on a personal level and pour into others. It’s so rewarding.”

This sense of belonging has become a central theme in Katie’s life, not only in her work but in how she raises her children. Katie proudly credits her children—Austin, Tegan, and Dax—with shaping her approach to community engagement. Whether it’s watching Austin learn life skills through the autism society, helping Tegan organize a Taylor Swift-inspired party benefiting the Canadian Mental Health Association, or supporting Dax’s love for advocating for animals, Katie finds joy in passing on her devotion to the community to the next generation. “Nothing fills my heart quite as much as including my children in this journey,” she says. “It’s been my greatest motivator, passing on that devotion to give more than you take and have fun while doing it.”

Katie is keenly aware of the challenges facing Fort McMurray today, particularly the economic uncertainty brought on by job loss and budget cuts. However, she remains optimistic. “The economy has forced social profits to become more creative in finding ways to generate revenue for necessary programming,” she explains. Katie believes that addressing these challenges involves supporting one another and finding joy along the way.

Looking ahead, Katie’s aspirations for the future center on growth—both personally and professionally. “I never want to stop learning,” she says. “Every event I’ve been a part of teaches me something new, and I want the next 10 years to be even more fulfilling than the last.” On a personal level, Katie hopes to continue contributing to Fort McMurray by providing exceptional hospitality and events that encourage residents to celebrate locally, rather than seeking experiences outside the region. She’s also excited to see how her children will carry on her legacy of service and commitment to the community.

Outside of her roles as a mother, business owner, and volunteer, Katie describes herself as highly competitive, a music junkie, a foodie, and a lover of house plants. “I’m always looking for my new favourite thing and next adventure,” she says with a smile. Through her passion for people, hospitality, and community, Katie Cooper is helping to nurture Fort McMurray—one event, one family, and one act of kindness at a time.
