CLASS OF 2021
, AGE 34
Co-founder of the Fort McMurray Premier Cheer Academy, Kierra Pelz spent a lot of time as a coach with Premier Academy, Father Mercredi Cheer Academy, and Huskies Athletics.
She sat down and chatted with YMM about her love of cheerleading, what motivates her, and what she’s grateful for.
YMM: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
KP:
My family, husband, and kids, and owning a business that’s main focus is lifting up and developing kids. I’m lucky to have lived in many communities in my younger life and to see what certain people and groups had done for me and were a part of my parents’ village; I’m very grateful to be able to offer a piece of that for parents in our community.
YMM: What is the most rewarding part of your career?
KP:
Certainly the most rewarding is seeing kids grow. Not only in their skills within cheerleading but also within their own lives, seeing them grow and learn and become young adults that are positively contributing to the community.
YMM: What is something people are always surprised to learn about you?
KP:
My brother and I cheered together. He’s since moved on to be a part of Team Canada for the last five or six years and is now coaching the Team Canada Academy to train athletes who are looking to be a part of the 2024 Olympic teams.
YMM: What motivates you?
KP:
Believe it or not, accountability is my motivation. Without someone or something to hold me accountable, nothing will get done. No workouts, work days or house chores ever get done unless I’m doing it to save myself from saying “it didn’t get done” out loud for no good reason.
YMM: What is the best advice you ever received?
KP:
You’ll figure it out, just stay calm, keep humble and remember that this too shall pass. Everything truly is able to be worked out, you just sometimes need to look at it from all angles before you figure it out.
