Niels Slotboom

A Champion for Sport and Community at Keyano College

CLASS OF 2024

, AGE 36

At just 36 years old, Niels Slotboom has already established himself as a dedicated coach, mentor, and community leader in Fort McMurray. Originally from Assen, Drenthe, in the Netherlands, Niels made the move to Canada in 2006 with his family—a journey that has now led him to Fort McMurray, where he is making a significant impact as the Head Coach of the Huskies Men’s Soccer and Futsal teams at Keyano College, as well as serving as the Athlete Services Coordinator.

Niels first arrived in Fort McMurray in 2021, relocating from Calgary for his position with Keyano College. “I moved here for the job, but the community is what makes it feel like home,” he says. This sense of belonging, which Niels has both embraced and helped foster, is something he actively works to cultivate in his athletes, whether they come from across Canada or across the globe.

His own educational background in business at Lakeland College helped prepare him for his multifaceted role at Keyano College. However, for Niels, coaching and mentoring student-athletes isn’t just about wins and losses. “The most rewarding part of my career is watching the student-athletes I work with grow both on and off the field and reach their goals,” he says. “I am very fortunate to call my hobby my career, and I love seeing their success, not just as players, but as people.”

Niels’ commitment to student-athletes extends far beyond the field. As the Athlete Services Coordinator, he ensures that these young athletes have the support they need to succeed in their studies and their personal lives. And his work isn’t confined to the college campus—Niels is deeply involved in the broader Fort McMurray community.

A believer in the power of sport to unite and inspire, Niels volunteers with several local organizations and events, including the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association, public and Catholic school boards, the Arctic Winter Games, and the Fort McMurray Marathon. He is also a key organizer of the Huskies Soccer annual charity game with local emergency services, which benefits Kidsport. For Niels, community engagement is a two-way street. “This community looks out for each other. ‘Fort McMurray Strong’ isn’t just a bumper sticker—it’s a way of life,” he explains. “I want to contribute to that and help make our community even stronger.”

Growing up, Niels’ parents instilled in him the importance of giving back and leaving things better than you found them. This principle still guides him today, both in his professional work and in his volunteer efforts. “From a young age, I was taught to value community and family. It’s something I’ve carried with me in everything I do,” Niels shares.

Looking to the future, Niels has ambitious goals. While he has aspirations to step into the professional side of soccer, his immediate focus remains on achieving more with the Huskies. “We have a few more goals to accomplish here before I move on,” he says, emphasizing his commitment to his team and the college.

One of the challenges Niels has encountered in his role is addressing the misconceptions people have about Fort McMurray. In his efforts to recruit student-athletes, he often finds himself dispelling myths about the region. “There are a lot of stigmas attached to Fort McMurray—some earned, some completely false. But the reality is that this is a great community, with excellent opportunities, a strong sense of belonging, and natural beauty,” he says. Niels is passionate about showing people the best aspects of the region and helping them understand why it’s such a special place to live and work.

Niels sees his role at Keyano College as pivotal to the future growth and development of Fort McMurray. By bringing in talented student-athletes and helping them become contributing members of the community, Niels is shaping the future of the region in his own way. “Some of our athletes will stay here and start their lives in Fort McMurray, and even for those who don’t, it’s my goal that they leave speaking highly of their time here,” he says.

Reflecting on his time in Fort McMurray so far, Niels is grateful for the opportunities he’s had and the support he’s received from his family, colleagues, and the community. “I’m incredibly appreciative of being part of the Top 50 Under 50,” he says. “I couldn’t have accomplished what I have without the support of everyone involved. And a special shoutout goes to my family who have been in my corner since day one!”

With his passion for coaching, his dedication to community, and his clear vision for the future, Niels Slotboom is undoubtedly a rising star in Fort McMurray—and someone to watch closely in the years to come.
