Building Stronger Communities Through Union Leadership & Healthcare

CLASS OF 2024

For Omer Hussein, Fort McMurray isn’t merely a workplace; it’s a living testament to his intertwined passions for healthcare and social justice. As a Medical Radiation Technologist with Alberta Health Services and the President of the Wood Buffalo & District Labour Council, Omer’s dedication spans more than a decade, pushing the boundaries of advocacy to ensure health, rights, and well-being are not luxuries but guarantees.

His dual roles as a healthcare provider and labour activist have forged a distinctive path—one that extends beyond the clinical confines and into the very heart of Fort McMurray’s social fabric.

Omer’s commitment to social justice traces back to Ottawa, where a family legacy of union activism deeply shaped his worldview. Raised in a household where the power of collective action was a constant narrative, thanks to his father’s involvement with the transit union and his sisters’ roles in the Public Service Alliance of Canada, Omer learned early that activism was more than just fighting for fair wages—it was about affirming dignity and demanding the right to a decent life. “It wasn’t just about better wages; it was about dignity and the right to a decent life,” Omer reflects. It is this belief that continues to fuel his tireless work in labour leadership, where his commitment to workers’ rights is as fervent as his dedication to patient care.

In the healthcare arena, Omer approaches his work with a rare blend of precision and empathy. He recognizes that every diagnostic image he captures carries the weight of a patient’s hope, anxiety, or fear. “Every scan tells a story, and my job is to make sure it’s the clearest story possible,” he says. But Omer’s ethos transcends the technical aspects of medical imaging; it’s evident in the way he reassures patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, demonstrating that the true art of healthcare lies in balancing skill with compassion.

Omer’s leadership of the Wood Buffalo & District Labour Council has been transformative, repositioning the council as a formidable advocate for workers across the region. He has spearheaded campaigns to prevent the layoff of 450 municipal employees, galvanizing the community in defence of these essential roles during turbulent economic times. His activism extends beyond municipal halls—Omer now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with educational workers, bolstering their quest for fair contracts and improved working conditions. “These are struggles that touch every corner of our community,” he explains, “and we’re stronger when we face them together.”

His impact, however, reaches beyond the confines of individual campaigns. Under Omer’s guidance, the Labour Council’s role in Fort McMurray has not only been revitalized; it has been reimagined as a platform for unity and action. Annual events like the Labour Day Barbecue, which brings together over 1,000 families, have evolved from simple community gatherings to powerful expressions of solidarity. The holiday dinners, fostering a sense of shared purpose among union leaders, are now staples of the local cultural calendar. Omer’s leadership also extends to confronting social injustices head-on, as demonstrated by events like the Black History Month screening of Harriet, which ignited conversations about resilience and equity, and the expanded Day of Mourning ceremony, a solemn tribute to those lost in workplace tragedies.

Yet, Omer’s ambitions stretch far beyond organizing events. He seeks to address the root causes of inequality, pushing for systemic change that reflects the diverse needs of the community. Whether advocating for fair labour agreements or working with organizations like the Centre of Hope to support the city’s most vulnerable, Omer’s approach is holistic. His vision is not limited to moments of advocacy but is aimed at creating a lasting collective power capable of reshaping Fort McMurray’s future. “Our mission is about more than just gatherings; it’s about building a collective voice that can make real change,” he asserts.

Omer Hussein’s story is one of resilience and determination, guided by the conviction that a community thrives when every member is afforded dignity, fairness, and opportunity. In Fort McMurray, his work has laid the foundation for a future where these principles are not just ideals but realities. Through unrelenting advocacy and an unwavering commitment to social justice, Omer is helping to shape a Fort McMurray where every individual can find their place in the fight for a better tomorrow.
