Born in Jaipur, India, Purva Sharma now refers to Fort McMurray as her hometown.
As Owner of Rajasthan Creations by Purva, she has made a name for herself throughout the region as an extraordinarily gifted designer and also as a volunteer. In 2020, she was recognized as a Woman of Inspiration by Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta; she recently sat down with YMM and chatted about her career and this place she calls home.
YMM: What is the most rewarding part of your career?
PS: The most rewarding part of my career is seeing the smiles on the faces and sparkles in the eyes of my clients when they find the perfect piece of ethnic clothing or dress accessories at a very reasonable price. Moreover they value my opinions and suggestions to help them look their best. And it is very satisfying to see when they send their pictures to me and thank me for their purchases.
YMM: What keeps you in Fort McMurray?
PS: This city is a vibrant, diverse, multicultural and welcoming community. The people here are very friendly and reliable. Being a small community, it is very easy to get around and it feels like you know most people in the town. Moreover, we have great amenities that we can only find in larger cities.
YMM: In your opinion, in what areas does Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo need improvement?
PS: I think we can and should improve on the healthcare front – to have better and wider specialist care in the hospital; have more family physicians and specialists to reduce the wait times for the appointments; and to have more diagnostic facilities.
YMM: What does community mean to you?
PS: I believe community is made of the people who respect each other, share common values, respect the values and beliefs of each other, are willing to help each other and care about the resources and facilities of the community.
YMM: Who is your hero, and why?
PS: My parents are my heroes as they gave me the best upbringing within their means, gave me a strong set of core values and have always been a constant source of guidance, motivation and positive energy.
