CLASS OF 2024
, AGE 40
As a proud lifelong resident of Fort McMurray, Teri-Lynn Goudie exemplifies dedication to community, culture, and education. At 40, Teri-Lynn is being recognized as one of Your McMurray Magazine’s Top 50 Under 50 for her profound impact as the Student Support Coordinator at the Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre (NAFC), where she works tirelessly to foster meaningful connections between Indigenous knowledge and students eager to learn.
Born and raised in Fort McMurray, Teri-Lynn’s roots run deep in the community. Growing up, she developed a strong sense of pride in the region and a passion for education that would shape her career. Teri-Lynn will graduate with a degree from the University of Calgary in the spring of 2025, and she will continue to live in Fort McMurray as she seeks to give back to the community that nurtured her personally and professionally.
Currently balancing a career at NAFC with full-time evening studies at the University of Calgary, Teri-Lynn’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. She is on track to earn her Bachelor of Education degree by May 2025, a milestone that reflects her ongoing commitment to both professional and personal growth. “My family has been incredibly supportive as I pursue my education,” she shares, emphasizing how critical her personal network has been in helping her navigate the challenges of working full-time while studying.
At NAFC, Teri-Lynn’s role as Student Support Coordinator offers her the opportunity to engage with Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers—an experience she describes as the most rewarding part of her career. “Learning how much Indigenous brilliance is in the community is incredibly inspiring. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to learn so much if it wasn’t for being employed by NAFC,” she reflects. This unique position allows her to create connections between Elders and the youth of Fort McMurray, facilitating a cultural exchange that enriches both students and the broader community.
A strong advocate for education, Teri-Lynn is deeply aware of the challenges facing Fort McMurray’s school system. With classroom sizes growing and limited resources for students, she believes the solution lies in securing increased funding to provide children with the education they deserve. “As a young community, we are confronted with large classroom sizes and insufficient support,” she explains. “This is a province-wide issue, and I believe the only way for students to receive the education they deserve is through increased funding.”
Beyond her professional work, Teri-Lynn is an active volunteer with NAFC and the wider community. One of her favourite events to volunteer for is ATC Cultural Festival, an annual celebration that brings together the region’s diverse cultures and traditions. This passion for service extends to her career goals, as she sees herself continuing to work with Fort McMurray’s youth to empower them with knowledge and cultural understanding.
Looking to the future, Teri-Lynn aspires to spend more time with her family after graduation, yet she remains committed to contributing to the development of the region. She envisions staying involved with young people in Fort McMurray, guiding them on their educational journeys and helping to spread the wealth of Indigenous knowledge she has gained through her work at NAFC.
When asked about her motivations for community involvement, Teri-Lynn credits her deep love for Fort McMurray. “Being from the community, I have a lot of pride in it and how many amazing opportunities there are here to learn,” she says. This pride drives her to take on the challenges her community faces and to work toward creating a brighter future for all its residents.
Teri-Lynn describes herself with the tagline, “Championing Indigenous knowledge and education in the heart of our community.” This sentiment perfectly captures her passion, dedication, and vision for the future of Fort McMurray—one where education and cultural knowledge work hand-in-hand to uplift the next generation.
Teri-Lynn Goudie is a shining example of what it means to give back to your community, and her work will undoubtedly continue to impact Fort McMurray for years to come.
