A Power Duo Shaping Fort McMurray's Future

CLASS OF 2024

Terry and Kelsey Babij are proof that with passion, dedication, and a commitment to community, individuals can make a lasting impact on their surroundings. Originally from Calgary, the Babijs have embraced Fort McMurray as their home for over seven years, working tirelessly to contribute to its growth and vibrancy. Their combined efforts in leadership, hospitality, and community service have earned them a spot in Your McMurray Magazine’s Top 50 Under 50 edition as a true “Power Duo.”

With over 23 years of experience in the power and HVAC industry, Terry Babij has found a unique balance between career success and community impact in Fort McMurray. As Branch Manager for United Rentals Power & HVAC, he not only leads his team with a focus on professional growth but also ensures that his company remains deeply embedded in the local community. Terry’s passion for empowering others is evident in how he supports the development of his employees, offering educational opportunities and training to foster their success.

“What I love most about my work is the ability to grow and empower employees, both personally and professionally,” Terry says. His role at United Rentals enables him to extend support beyond the workplace through local sponsorships and in-kind donations, which have made a tangible difference in various community events and initiatives. Even though he works for a global company, Terry emphasizes the importance of hiring locally and staying connected to the region he calls home.

Terry’s community contributions are not confined to his professional role. Known for his hands-on involvement, he often takes the initiative to deliver and set up equipment for local events, reflecting his genuine dedication to the place he now calls home. “The people I’ve met and befriended here are incredible,” he shares. “They’re leaders and advocates for Fort McMurray and the surrounding region. I’ve fallen into community involvement through their help, and I’m grateful for that.”

This spirit of community engagement drives Terry’s commitment to making Fort McMurray a better place for everyone. He is particularly passionate about encouraging residents to take pride in their community. “People need to care about where they live. Support local and promote local—that’s how we create a better place for everyone,” he insists. By fostering a sense of responsibility and support for local businesses, he believes that Fort McMurray can continue to grow and prosper.

Looking to the future, Terry aims to remain rooted in Fort McMurray, using his skills and resources to support the region’s development. “I want to keep doing what I’ve been doing—helping out wherever I can,” he says. “This is where I want to make a difference.” His optimism about the region’s potential is balanced by a realistic understanding of the challenges it faces, such as the need for a more engaged local population and a robust support system for community growth. “If I can help in any way, I’m always willing,” Terry says, reaffirming his commitment to Fort McMurray’s success.

Kelsey Babij has made her mark in Fort McMurray through her role as the front-of-house manager at The Bear & Buffalo restaurant, located within the Fort McMurray Golf Club. Her love for people and community shines through her work, where she connects with residents and visitors alike. Originally coming to the region for work, Kelsey quickly discovered that it was the people and the vibrant community that would make Fort McMurray her true home.

Kelsey’s role at The Bear & Buffalo allows her to bring people together through shared experiences, especially in the context of community-building events like golf tournaments. “The love for people and seeing people happy makes it easy to stay motivated in community activities,” she shares. By organizing and supporting various tournaments, she has helped foster a sense of camaraderie that extends beyond the golf course, creating opportunities for individuals to connect and build lasting relationships.

Her commitment to community service extends well beyond her professional duties. Kelsey has volunteered for local events, such as the Alberta Winter Games in 2018, and she continues to support charitable initiatives through fundraising tournaments. These efforts have given her a deep appreciation for the impact that local engagement can have on the community. “It’s great to see the faces that we help through different tournaments and initiatives,” she says, underscoring the satisfaction that comes from giving back.

For Kelsey, Fort McMurray is more than just a place to live; it’s a community where she has found some of her closest friends and created lasting memories. “Fort McMurray has been the best place I’ve lived; I have made the most amazing friends here and will continue to call it home for the foreseeable future,” she says proudly. Her personal and professional networks have played a crucial role in shaping her vision for a thriving community.

Looking ahead, Kelsey has ambitious goals for both her career and her community contributions. At The Bear & Buffalo, she is committed to growing the local golf scene and maintaining the restaurant’s reputation as a premier dining destination in Fort McMurray. She also hopes to continue raising funds for local charities through events at the golf club. Personally, she is excited to expand her network even further and explore new places through travel, all while keeping her roots firmly planted in Fort McMurray.

Kelsey is keenly aware of the challenges facing the community, particularly when it comes to homelessness and the need for expanded support programs. “There aren’t enough housing options or programs for those who need help,” she notes, highlighting the importance of collaboration among businesses, residents, and local leaders to address these issues. Her approach is one of active engagement—whether through hosting events, participating in community discussions, or using her platform to raise awareness.

Together, Terry and Kelsey Babij represent the best of what community leadership can achieve. Their shared commitment to Fort McMurray’s growth and well-being has been a driving force in their work and volunteer efforts. While Terry focuses on strengthening local businesses and supporting community initiatives through his role at United Rentals, Kelsey brings people together through hospitality and charity work at The Bear & Buffalo.

Their deep love for Fort McMurray and its people is the foundation of their success as a couple and as community leaders.
