John Tuttauk

Building Bridges, Empowering Communities

CLASS OF 2025

When John Tuttauk first arrived in Fort McMurray in 2000, he was a young man looking for opportunity. Five years later, he returned to Newfoundland and Labrador for a time, but the pull of the region never left him. In 2015, he came back to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo and planted roots for good. Today, at 48, he’s not only made this place home, he’s become one of its most passionate community connectors.

As Community Liaison for Imperial Oil, John plays a vital role in strengthening relationships between industry and the diverse communities that make up the region. His work bridges cultures, generations, and interests, and he approaches every interaction with respect and authenticity. “I always lead with respect and listen to what I am told,” he says. “A true leader speaks the truth and accepts everyone’s opinions and views. It’s okay to challenge ideas, but not each other.”

In his career, two responsibilities rise to the top of his list of personal rewards: workforce development for Indigenous youth and hands-on engagement with residents across the region. Whether he’s visiting First Nation and Métis communities, coordinating involvement in local events, or supporting youth pathways into employment, John finds meaning in the connections he makes. “Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is a very diverse place to live,” he says. “To sit and talk with many different people is very educational and makes me very proud to do what I do.”

John’s community contributions reach far beyond his job description. He leads teams of volunteers across the region, showing up at Treaty Days, Métis celebrations, Pride events, and countless other cultural and community gatherings. His leadership style—humble, respectful, and people-first—makes him a trusted presence in any setting.

His strength in the community is matched by the support he receives at home. John speaks with deep gratitude about his wife and daughter, who encouraged him to take on his current role when he was hesitant about change. “My amazing wife has always supported me, and my daughter is my biggest fan,” he says. “They’re truly my best friends, and I’m blessed to have such a supportive family.”

That support network is what nudged him into a position that has become his passion. “When I was offered this role, I was very nervous,” he recalls. “But with their support and a little persuasion, I took it on, and it’s my favourite role to date. It feels good to have a job that is structured around giving back to our community.”

John’s goals for the coming years are grounded in gratitude and growth. Personally, he wants to continue enjoying life with his family and making the most of every moment. Professionally, he hopes to keep growing within his company. “I feel like the sky really is the limit,” he says.

Through his work and personal experiences, John has developed a strong belief in giving back and lifting others up. His role has shown him the importance of building relationships, listening, and helping wherever possible. He’s particularly passionate about preparing the next generation for what lies ahead.

He acknowledges that the oil sands industry is changing, and with it, the region must adapt. “The industry isn’t what it was when I started,” he says. “Being open-minded and accepting change is important. Innovation is leading the way.” For John, the key to long-term prosperity lies in educating and training local youth for the evolving energy landscape.

He sees his role in the region’s future through two major lenses: fostering community engagement and supporting workforce development. By building trust between industry and residents, and ensuring young people have access to opportunities, he hopes to support a strong, sustainable future for the region. “We live in the land of opportunity,” he says. “We just need the right people to help deliver these opportunities. I’m very excited to do my best to be one of these people.”

At the end of the day, John keeps his philosophy simple and sincere. “I’m just an everyday guy trying my best to be the best I can be,” he says. “I’m extremely grateful for the life I live and hope I can help make others feel the same.”

With heart, humility, and a commitment to connection, John Tuttauk is helping shape the future of the region he proudly calls home.
